My bullmastiff, Joey, is on the couch snoring away and dreaming of chasing things out in the yard. His snoring is hypnotic and we often just sit under him and fall asleep to the rhythm. Joey relaxes the house and brings us all to state of calm that we do not always find in the hectic pace of life.
It’s not that Joey always sleeps. Outside, on the leash, he’s a loyal companion and friend to all we come across. Once he has a chance to get to know someone, Joey is their best friend forever. He likes to stand sideways against their legs and be petted on the side by most adults.
Kids approach Joey and want to look into his deep-set eyes. Related to Bulldogs, bullmastiffs have amazing eyes that look a little sad, but also have a genuine intelligence and compassion for all. Kids put their hands out and often come away with a little of the customary drool that the dog is known for. Some kids just rub their hands against Joey’s back to get rid of the drool. He doesn’t care.
We walk for about forty minutes every morning and look forward to seeing other dogs. Joey gets along with the others and they like him too. He’s been around the block enough times to know from training not to get overly excited to see his friends. We play in the yard daily also. Mostly, Joey likes to run after things. He moves around easily and has great fun just running around the yard.
We could not be happier with our bullmastiff. Loyalty and courage are the traits that often get associated with the breed, but for us, Joey’s very presence is what we cherish the most. He’s the most lovable dog a family could have and we are so lucky he's ours!
